Legacy of Roses

The History of Wych Cross Garden Centre

Nestled down in the Ashdown Forest, Wych Cross Garden Centre was established over 50 years ago as a traditional nursery specialising in roses. At the beginning of the 2000’s it had one of the largest retail selections of roses in the UK, with over 1,400 varieties.

In 2019, a complete refurbishment was taken place, by Coolings, to improve the customer facilities, plant areas and general shop layout. We took pride in restoring the rose production nursery and began growing again on-site in 2020, producing roses to supply all 4 our our garden centres.

Today, the Garden Centre of the Year (GCA South of the Thames) 2022 & 2023, is focused on providing those who love plants a large selection of herbaceous and perennial plants, as well as an extensive range of shrubs, roses, fruit trees and much more.

The Water Pump

As celebrating the heritage of the centre is at the heart of our passion, we undertook a restoration project of an old water pump, that sits upon the rose garden. It once provided water for the garden centre and the hotel that sits upon site. The restoration was a huge job as the pump had to be relocated from its initial position, and although it isn’t a functional object, it allows us to reflect on the vast history of the site.

The Hybrid Tea Room

The Hybrid Tea Room, a wonderful cafe that offers a range of drinks, cakes, breakfast and lunch, looks upon the rose area of the centre. The picturesque view from the terrace presents aisles and aisles of colourful roses, pinks blushing throughout each row.
