Lawncare for a Luscious Lawn

Lawncare for a Luscious Lawn

Spring has finally arrived and that means one thing, it’s time to get your lawn summer-ready!

With the weather finally warming and drying up, your grass should be strengthening so the need for attention and care to ensure a beautiful summer lawn is essential.

Top Tips for your lawn

1. Mow Often

Your grass should be growing strongly now so the need for regular mowing (around once a week) is great for encouraging growth. By mowing regularly you are encouraging strong growth and deterring weeds from growing. Clippings can be added to compost heaps but be careful not to add too much as it may slow down the rate of composting.

2.  Cut Edges

To prevent grass from creeping into the flower borders or weeds growing and harming the lawn quality we suggest edging with a half-moon edging iron. We recommend the Kent & Stowe Carbon Steel Edging Iron  (£22.99)available in our Garden Centres.

3. Feed Your Grass and Scarify

It is vital to do this in order to maintain a fresh and healthy lawn. We recommend;

  • Miracle-Gro Complete 4in1 8m2 (£14.99) which feeds your lawn whilst also working to kill weeds and control moss, and provides a richer, greener lawn in 7 days. The formula helps to protect against heat, draught and other stresses. In 1 week the moss will blacken and can be easily raked out, and weeds will be killed within 3-5 weeks.

  • Miracle-Gro Evergreen No Rake Moss Remover Lawn food (£18.99), which is not only a feed but a moss killer. It contains a bacteria which consumes the moss and doesn’t turn it black, so you will not need to rake it out. It also contains a slow release lawn fertiliser that feeds your lawn for up to 3 months and helps prevent moss from redeveloping.

4. Watering

All lawns benefit from watering if the weather isn’t providing it. Watering every 7- 10 days helps encourage growth, especially for new lawns. Just make sure not to overwater and re-use water from the bath or from your waterbutt.

5. Repairing Bare Patches

In order to do this place the seed, add a top dressing and allow the seed to establish, we suggest Westland Lawn and Turf Dressing (£6.99).

6. Sowing New Grass

If you are sowing new grass now, try not to walk on, or mow it until it has reached 2-3 inches. You must ensure care is taken in feeding (see above) alongside reseeding bare patches and dealing with moss and weed invasion.

Spring is the best season to lay new turf and keep well-watered if a dry spell hits. We sell turf by the roll with each roll sized 1m². You may wish to call beforehand to check our stock levels.

7. Be Wary of Frost

Check the forecast and don’t be tempted to mow too early as the temperature has a huge effect on your grass. The grass becomes rigid once frozen and when walked on, the individual blade of grass ruptures, which damages the leaf cells and may have an impact on growth.

In order to prevent damage, keep the lawnmower blade high and the cut light and then gradually lower the blade as the weather becomes warmer.

We are lucky enough to be one of two garden centres in the country to trial this. It is a great method of reducing waste for the environment and allows you to buy what you need!
