- Sow in spring, 1.5mm (/16in) deep in a good free draining compost, but do not exclude light, which is beneficial to germination. Germination usually takes 8-12 days at 15-18C (60-65F). They can also be sown outdoors in spring where they are to flower and in mild districts, in late summer/autumn. This later sowing will often produce flowers in winter as well as spring and plants can be potted up into 13cm (5in) pots in autumn and brought into a cold greenhouse.
- Transplant when large enough to handle into boxes. Grow under cool conditions. Gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions for 1-15 days and plant out 3cm (12in) apart into ordinary soil in sun or part shade.

The large, showy richly fragrant flower spikes come in a range of pinks, purples, creams, whites and yellows. They also make magnificent winter flowering pot plants for the cold greenhouse. Flowers late summer. Height: 30cm (12in).
