  • Common name: Variegated Japanese Maple 'Enkan'
  • An acer can be deciduous trees or large shrubs with paired, often palmately-lobed leaves and small flowers followed by characteristic winged fruits. Many have fine autumn colour, and some have ornamental stems
  • Enkan' is a rounded, deciduous shrub or small tree with with palmate, bronze to maroon leaves divided into five linear to narrowly lance-shaped, toothed lobes, the entire leaf turning bright red in autumn. Inconspicuous, green flowers in spring are followed by winged, red-flushed, green seed pods
  • Grow in moderately fertile moist but well-drained soil in full sun; will tolerate partial shade but foliage colour best in a sunny location
  • Height and spread in 20 years: 2meters x 1.5metre. Maturity: 10-20 years
  • Watch out for pests such as Aphids & hores chestnut scale that may cause problems for the tree. Field maples are also suseptible to Verticillium wilt a fungal disease that lives in the soil. It invades susceptible plants through their roots and spreads through the plant’s vascular system

Acer palmatum 'Enkan' is a small, upright, outstanding strap-leaved cultivar. A lovely little palmatum variety with wine-red deeply lobed foliage in the spring turning into bright shades of red in the autumn.Very similar to the variety 'Red Pygmy' but holds it's colour better in the summer months. Perfect for small gardens or planting in a large container. ery easy to grow in a wide range of well-drained soils. They thrive in sun but with partial shade to protect the leaves from scorch. A sheltered area away from strong winds is preferred.
