Having lived here for a year, we realised that we would benefit from a path to take us from the house to the shed. We wanted to keep it environmentally friendly so we have decided to create a walkway made of decking boards interspersed with very low growing ground cover plants which flower and provide nectar and pollen for pollinators.
I have chosen a mix of herbs and alpines which will tolerate light foot traffic including Thyme Creeping Red, Chamomile, Aubretia, Saxifrage, Sagina and Mazus. They all have interesting foliage and flower at different times ensuring there is year-round interest.
We started by cutting the decking boards to size and then placing them out across the lawn – I wanted to create a less-formal look so they’ve been cut to different sizes and I haven’t lined them all up perfectly. I then started planting the herbs and alpines in-between them, I’ve not planted them too close together as I want to give them room to spread out.
Like with most gardening projects it is a work in progress but we’re looking forward to getting it finished and enjoying watching the wildlife it attracts!
We will be sharing more updates from Lizzie and the team on our Facebook pages over the coming week, keep an eye out!
