Using seasonal bedding plants is a great way to decorate your garden this Autumn. Eye-catching displays can be created using simple combinations that will add colour and vibrancy to your outdoor living space. Colour theming is a simple and effective way to plan a display. Here are a few easy ideas to help you plant something beautiful to cheer up the shortening days.
Autumnal Orange
With Halloween and Guy Fawkes Night approaching, the Bronze shades of Autumn chrysanthemums catch the mood of the moment.
Vibrant Yellows
Yellow is a colour that will shine out on dull days. Yellow violas combined with yellow hardy primulas look lovely and remind us that spring is just around the corner! Golden trailing Vinca minor ‘Illumination’ is a great evergreen cascade plant. With a golden dwarf conifer as a centre piece and dwarf narcissus bulbs popped in now, the party will continue well beyond Easter next year!
Mellow Blues
Blue, white and silver are three colours that combine well to produce a cool but stylish effect. Try using Blue Trailing Coolwave pansies cascading down the pot with silver ivy and evergreen silver thyme plants. The thyme adds a lovely fragrant dimension to the pot. Cineraria Silver Leaf as the centre plant adds height and has a beautiful dissected foliage.
Fiery Reds
The low ruby foliage and berries of Wintergreen (Gaultheria procumbens) combines well with rusty reds of winter pansies. The maroon buds of Skimmia japonica ‘Rubella’ or red berries of Solanum pseudocapsicum ‘Thurino’ are a good choice of upright.
Passionate Pinks
The pastel effect of pink planting combinations is very aesthetically pleasing. Calluna Garden Girls are fantastic bud-blooming heathers that give months of colour. Bees also adore them as a source of late nectar. Planted with pink mini-cyclamen and pink winter pansies makes a lovely show.
Top Tip
Pick a glazed pot which matches the colour of your planting scheme.
