Holiday: Osborne House and the Isle of Wight (3 Day Trip)

08:30 - 17:00

Eventbrite - Osborne House and the Isle of Wight (3 Day Trip)

BOOKINGS ARE NOW CLOSED FOR THIS EVENT

Osborne House and the Isle of Wight

Date: Tuesday 8th - Thursday 10th August 2017 (3 Days, 2 nights)

Day 1

Leaving Coolings we will make our way to our first venue of the trip, the world famous and award winning Sir Harold Hillier Gardens in Hampshire. Sir Harold was a renowned plantsman and nurseryman whose business interests still run today as a specialist wholesale nursery and a chain of garden centres.

In 1977 Sir Harold left the Gardens under the sole trusteeship of Hampshire County Council. It is now run as a charity under the remit of horticulture, conservation, education and recreation. Among its outstanding features are the splendour of the seasonal planting displays set in 180 acres.

From here we go on to catch a ferry to the Isle of Wight and then on to our hotel, the four star Lakeside Park Hotel and Spa, where we will enjoy our evening meal at the luxurious hotel restaurant.

Day 2

After a leisurely breakfast, we leave for Osborne House.

Osborne House was built between 1845 and 1851 to provide Queen Victoria and Prince Albert with a private family home. It was built in the Italianate style in order to fit its setting on an island whose temperate climate and panoramic views over the Solent reminded Prince Albert of the Bay of Naples.

The 19th-century gardens and estate eventually covered more than 2,000 acres (800 hectares) but now extends to a more modest 354 acres (143 hectares) and includes formal terraces with statuary, a walled garden and extensive parkland.

Afterwards we will return to the coach for a tour of the island and stop in Shanklin for a while to have dinner at your leisure before returning to our hotel for the night.

Day 3

We begin the day with a return to the mainland by ferry and then proceed to the less well known garden of    .

This elegant country manor and tranquil garden sit so harmoniously within the landscape that one cannot exist without the other.

The house was lovingly rebuilt by its last owner, Ralph Dutton, after a catastrophic fire in 1960. Enjoy the beautifully proportioned rooms which house his exquisite collection of ceramics and art, each window offering undisturbed views to the tranquil countryside beyond.

Beautifully manicured lawns lead the eye down avenues of sculptured topiary, past borders full of the heady scent of roses, to breathtaking views across the South Downs

Finally, we take our leave for a relaxing return to Coolings.

This is the alternative date for Highclere Castle/Downton Abbey on Sunday 20th August 2017.

Date: Sunday 20th August 2017

Price: £79 per person

For fans of the popular TV show Downton Abbey, this is a must see.

Believe it or not there is a 2 year waiting list to visit Highclere, and we have been very lucky to sneak to the front of the queue by taking up an unexpected cancellation by another company.

Departing Coolings around 8.30am we will arrive at the Castle for our timed entry slot of 11am, and then we have the run of the Castle the gardens and the Egyptian Exhibition.

The joy of the Castle being used in the TV series is that we’ve already had a glimpse inside the property, but now we can see the State Rooms and Grounds in all their finery and glimpse the respective lives of those Upstairs and Downstairs!

Departing around 5.30pm we aim to return to Coolings between 7pm and 7:30pm, depending on traffic.

Tickets:

You will receive an email from Eventbrite our online booking system provider. This email will contain your ticket/s . Please make sure you print these tickets along with the accompanying email. You will be required to present these to a member of the Coolings team before attending the event / excursion.

Additional Information:

This trip will depart at 10:00am from Coolings Garden Centre, we suggest you arrive 15 minutes early to allow time for parking. Within our car park there will be a designated area for you to park. Please follow the signage on the day.

The trip will return at approximately 7:30pm, but please be aware this time is approximate and can be subject to change dependant on traffic and circumstances beyond our control.

Coolings always use the finest quality coaches and all but the very smallest vehicles are fitted with toilets and we also aim to stop roughly every 90 minutes to stretch your legs and refresh ourselves.

A member of the Coolings team will be present throughout your excursion to assist you and be on hand should you have any questions or concerns.

In 2011 Illyria raised the bar for the major UK open-air touring theatre companies by becoming the first and only one to add operetta to its regular season.

In the town of Titipu flirting has been made illegal. The penalty, by order of The Mikado, is death. Too bad then that the main culprit is the Lord High Executioner Ko-Ko, who wishes to marry his beautiful young ward Yum-Yum, and who has no intention of executing himself. Can the itinerant musician Nanki-Poo be persuaded to be executed in his place? Can Pooh-Bah, the one man who occupies every role in public office in Titipu, be persuaded to take advantage of his influential access to himself to bend his own ear? And what would happen if anyone should dare to tell the Mikado that an execution had taken place when in fact it hadn’t…?

Gilbert & Sullivan’s wry comic opera, set in Japan but with satire clearly aimed at the British political classes, gets the complete Illyria treatment. It is performed by a cast of 6 actor/singers accompanied by a musical director on keyboards, and is produced on a stage boasting a strikingly large (and authentic) Japanese torii gate. Despite the reduction in scale, not a single word from WS Gilbert's libretto is cut, nor a single note or harmony from Sir Arthur Sullivan's score unsung.

Following the company’s runaway successes with HMS Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance, Iolanthe and Ruddigore, Illyria returns with yet another romantic summer opera to leave you with a great big silly smile on your face and a song in your heart.

Also don't forget to book 'A Comedy of Errors' (Sunday 18th June), 'Macbeth' (Thursday 6th July), 'The Lost World' (Friday 14th July) and 'The Mikado' (Saturday 26th August)
