Day 1

Travelling on a luxury coach with toilet and regular stops, we head from Coolings to the first of our venues, Stourhead.

When Stourhead first opened in the 1740s, a magazine described it as ‘a living work of art’. The world-famous landscape garden has at its centrepiece a magnificent lake reflecting classical temples, mystical grottoes, and rare and exotic trees, and offers a day of fresh air and discovery.

Being rather large at 2,650 acres we won’t be able to see everything, but we should gain a good overview!

Moving on we make the trek to the Carlyon Bay Hotel where we will enjoy the luxury of dinner, and bed and breakfast for our 3 night stay! This four star hotel, spa and golf club enjoys stunning views over the coast and is something to spoil us in itself! We even have the option of a round of golf included in the price…. If we have the time and the clubs!

Day 2

After a short journey, we have the whole day to enjoy the world renowned Eden Project. Recovered from an old quarry, this project has developed onwards and upwards to the point where every visit is a unique visit.

Day 3

Again, after another very short journey, we arrive at another renowned venue, The Lost Gardens of Heligan. Twenty-five years ago, Heligan’s historic gardens were unknown and unseen; lost under a tangle of weeds. It was only the chance discovery of a door in the ruins that led to the restoration of this once great estate. Today, the Lost Gardens have been put back where they belong: in pride of place among the finest gardens in Cornwall if not the world.

Day 4

Today we say goodbye to Cornwall and the hotel and make our way home via RHS Garden Rosemoor. I’m sure many of us have visited Wisley, but this wonderful place will hopefully be new to you and well worth the visit!

Travelling on with regular breaks we hope to arrive back at Coolings in the evening.

Please note that all of our visits will require walking, steps and hilly slopes which may be slippery and we advise you to wear sensible shoes.

Eventbrite - Portsmouth A Victorian Christmas

Royal Hospital Chelsea and Chelsea Physic Garden

Date: Friday 12th May 2017

Price: £79 per person

We combine two remarkable attractions on one day!

We depart Coolings around 8am and travel into Central London for our first stop of the day, a guided tour of The Royal Hospital Chelsea. We’re all familiar with the red coated veterans, but did you realise the hospital was founded 325 years ago by Charles II and was designed by Sir Christopher Wren! The remarkable building houses some 300 former soldiers in a Grade I listed building, which continues to be preserved for the many generations who will follow.

After the tour you will have the opportunity to purchase a light lunch in the café at the hospital before we walk to our second venue for the day, the Chelsea Physic Garden, where we will enjoy a guided tour of this secret garden!

The Chelsea Physic Garden was founded in 1673 as the Apothecaries’ Garden, with the purpose of training apprentices in the identification and use of medicinal plants. The location was chosen for its proximity to the River Thames. This allowed the Apothecaries to moor their barges, collect plants in the surrounding areas, and take advantage of the river’s warm air currents, which contribute to the Garden’s unique microclimate. River access also allowed plants arriving from around the world to be introduced to the British Isles via the Garden.

It's back! Illyria's production of Jane Austen's glorious social comedy attracted sell-out audiences for 4 consecutive years. It toured throughout the UK and Europe, attracted nationwide critical acclaim and at its run at the 2003 Edinburgh Fringe, the queue for returns stretched around the block.

In a social whirlwind of balls, dinners and very eligible officers, Lizzie Bennett and Fitzwilliam Darcy stand alone as the only sane people and they hate each other! Or do they? Can she see beyond his pride, and can he overcome her prejudice, in order to achieve their mutual happiness?

If your idea of Jane Austen is costume-drama, empire-lines and tea-parties, then this sparkling adaptation, based entirely on the original novel, is something to make you change your mind. Bring a picnic and have a ball as the irrepressible Illyria sharpen their claws to bring you Jane Austen at her vibrant, pacy, forthright, bitchy best!

Also don't forget to book 'A Comedy of Errors' (Sunday 18th June), 'Macbeth' (Thursday 6th July), 'The Lost World' (Friday 14th July) and 'The Mikado' (Saturday 26th August)

On the night you are welcome to bring a picnic and make a real evening of it in our garden. Also drinks and snacks will be available on the night

Seating will not be available, you can bring your own chairs, but they will be situated at the back as people who bring blankets will be at the front, so everyone gets a clear view.

As this is an all weather event, always dress for cold weather, we suggest bringing plastic sheeting and wearing good waterproofs in the event of rain, umbrellas will not be allowed as they block the view.
