Event Details:
We are very excited to announce that Len Goodman, known to millions as the past Head Judge of Strictly Come Dancing and current Head Judge of Dancing With The Stars, will be coming to Coolings on Thursday 6th September, to chat about his amazing life and career, and to entertain us with some of his life stories and Strictly gossip. Len will be giving two talks timed to start at 2.30pm and 7.30pm and we strongly encourage you to book early as demand for the event is expected to be high. Len will be joined on stage by journalist Jo Goodman, who will be interviewing Len in a ‘Life Stories’ type setting.

Born in Bethnal Green in the East End of London, Len started his career relatively late in life. He actually wanted to be a footballer and it wasn’t until the age of 20 that the ex-docker started dancing. Having retired after a successful competitive dancing career, which included winning Dual of the Giants, British Rising Stars, The British Exhibition Championships (four times) and the World Exhibition Championships in the early 1970’s, it was a natural progression for him to open his own dance school in Kent.

As an Examiner for the National Association of Teachers of Dance, a Fellow of the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dance, Adjudicator for the World Dance Council, British Dance Council, Ballroom Dancers’ Federation and a founder member of the International Dance Sport Judges and Trainers Association, what Len doesn’t know about dance isn’t worth knowing!

Len has received various awards in the UK, including a Life Achievement Award for his work in dance and two Carl Allen Awards (The equivalent Oscars of the dance world). His work on Strictly Come Dancing and Dancing With The Stars has ensured nominations and awards aplenty and in 2006-2007 he was personally nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for his work on Dancing With The Stars.

Len has made numerous TV and radio appearances in the UK and has also been a very successful presenter of several shows too, as well as starring in the Strictly Live Tour for many years.

He has produced many teaching DVD’s over the years for the dance teaching industry as well as an instructional DVD for the general public “Dance With Len Goodman”. Len has also written his autobiography “Better Late Than Never” and also has had two further publications Len’s Lost London and Dancing Around Britain.

We can’t wait to hear about Len’s amazing dance journey at our Len Goodman ‘Life Stories’ event to be held on Thursday 6th September.

Day 1

Travelling on a luxury coach with toilet and regular stops we head off at 8am and wind our way to the Channel Tunnel, arriving around 10.30 for the 11.20pm shuttle.

After our smooth crossing, we will make our way directly to the hotel with a couple of comfort stops to keep ourselves as fresh as possible.

We should arrive at our four-star Hotel in Versailles, the Pullman Château De Versailles, at around 6pm where we will enjoy a buffet evening meal, bed and breakfast on our first night.

Day 2

Being well located to access all the gardens we are visiting, we will travel to the Garden at Giverny which once belonged to the world-famous Claude Monet.

Here you can spend as much time as you like exploring the site and then perhaps visit the town itself. Lunch is not included but there are many opportunities for refreshments.

We will return in the late afternoon to the hotel to enjoy bed and breakfast, so you are free to choose your own evening meal in the hotel or elsewhere whilst exploring the lovely town.

Day 3

Today, we visit the less well known but remarkable Champ du Bataille. Millions of Euros have been spent restoring this site to its former glory, which was and is quite spectacular!

We will be arriving on an unusual day when they will be hosting ‘Les Journées du Patrimoine’, which is a kind of open day when far more of the site is available to visit than normal, and we will be free to wander the open parts of the site at will!

We will return to the hotel in the late afternoon where we will be enjoy bed and breakfast accommodation.

Day 4

For some, today will be the highlight of our tour as we visit the Palace of Versailles and the formal gardens which are world renowned.

Our hotel is within walking distance of the gates, so our journey time each way will be very brief!

Versailles was the seat of power for the French Monarchy under Louis XIV, known as ‘The Sun King’ and was designed to be the ‘must see, must be palace’ and an expression of the power of the greatest absolute monarch in Europe.

Later, during the French revolution, Versailles became the focus of hatred for the Monarchy and the Royal Family was forced to flee to Paris.

After spending the day at this place of great history, we will return for one more night at the hotel on a bed and breakfast basis.

Day 5

Sadly, all good things must come to an end and today we will wind our way homewards towards Calais, stopping at any interesting places we can find time for as we head to the Tunnel.

Depending on travel, we should return to Coolings in the early evening.
