Day 1

Departing Coolings bright and early we start our journey by heading to a garden made famous as the quiet star of BBC’s Gardeners’ World, Barnsdale. This garden, made famous by Geoff Hamilton, has continued to develop and is now Britain’s largest collection of individually designed gardens! Bring a camera and get some ideas!

Moving on from here we run northwards to our first hotel of this tour in Harrogate, The White Hart Hotel, where we will stay on a B&B basis. The hotel is in the centre of the beautiful town, where there are numerous restaurants.

Day 2

After breakfast we leave the hotel to travel to one of the greatest new gardens at Alnwick. Home of the Duke of Northumberland, this garden has been developed by the current Duke’s wife, Jane Northumberland, and contains a grand cascade, poison garden, rose garden and one of the world’s biggest tree houses. We should also have access to the adjacent castle where some of Harry Potter was filmed.

Finally we travel on to our Edinburgh base at The George Hotel in the centre of this beautiful city, where once again we will enjoy four star luxury on a B&B basis.

Day 3

The day is yours to explore this beautiful city, and I am sure we will be able to help with suggestions, including the Royal Botanic Garden which is both free and exceptional! If you’re feeling fit, there’s always the famous volcanic outcrop known as Arthur’s Seat.

In the evening we will enjoy the peak of this tour, dinner on the Royal Yacht Britannia! This will be a formal dinner and we will require guests to wear jacket and tie, and ladies to be in frocks. If we are to dine like royalty, we should make a real occasion of it!

Put flash or similar: “An experience of a lifetime” for Royal Yacht Britannia

Day 4

We leave our Edinburgh digs behind and run back to England to spend a little time near the coast of Northumberland, where we will be able pay a visit to Bamburgh Castle and see the beautiful surrounding coastline.

Bamburgh Castle sits on an outcrop of volcanic dolerite. Known locally as whinstone for the sound it makes when hit by a stonemason’s hammer, it provides a natural throne upon which the castle sits forty five metres above sea level.

You will not be surprised to hear that such a fortress was key in English and Scottish history, being associated with many Kings up to Henry VI and including the legendary ‘Hotspur’.

Tracking on south we will return to the White Hart in Harrogate for an overnight break on a B&B basis once more.

Day 5

We leave Harrogate behind and move southwards for our final stop, Woolsthorpe Manor.

You may never have heard of this place, yet one of the most important men in scientific history was born here!

Sir Isaac Newton made many of his most important discoveries about light and gravity here in the plague years of 1665-6. The manor house, his family home, is furnished as a 17th-century farmhouse might have been at this time. You can still see the famous apple tree that inspired his thoughts on gravity.

Finally, after we’ve all dropped apples on each other’s heads, we return to Coolings, just in time to start the weekend.

In the bard’s shortest, funniest and most rumbustious comedy, two sets of identical twins, separated at birth, unknowingly end up in the same city. More and more people are sucked into a vortex of mistaken identity including an officer who is paid per arrest, a goldsmith who hasn't been paid at all, a delayed merchant, an irate courtesan and a mad exorcist. To say nothing of a wife who sometimes feels her husband has two different personalities, and a poor immigrant who is arrested for being the wrong nationality. And what exactly is the Abbess of Ephesus's dark secret?  Will anything ever make sense again?

To cap it all, this year Illyria’s Shakespeare production is re-located to the town of Ephesus, Mexico, and is performed by our very own 5-piece Mariachi band, resplendent in ponchos and sombreros. Ay caramba!

Also don't forget to book 'Macbeth' (Thursday 6th July), 'The Lost World' (Friday 14th July) and 'The Mikado' (Saturday 26th August)
