Autumn Acers

In the autumn months, Acers create some of the most spectacular garden displays. From golden-yellow to firey red to dark purples, they are sure to guarantee fantastic autumn shades.

We have a wide variety of acers availabe to shop in stores or online.

These are twelve of our favourite varieties for autumn, guaranteed to capture the colours of the season.

 

 

Acer palmatum ‘Atropurpureum’

A slow-growing acer with fantastic red-purple leaves which turn to a brilliant bright red in autumn. Ideal as a small tree – keep it in a light area to bring out the darkest purple ‘Atropurpureum’  has to offer.

Acer palmatum ‘Brown Sugar’

A healthy and strong growing Japanese maple, with chocolate brown to dark green shoots in spring. After midsummer it turns bright red and keeps going until late September.

Acer palmatum ‘Fireglow’

A large bushy acer which can grow to 4m in height. It has lobed leaves of a pinkish red in spring, developing to dark red in summer and then turning a fantastic purple-red in autumn.

Acer palmatum var. dissectum ‘Red Dragon’

‘Red Dragon’ is a compact acer, named for its fantastic dissected leaves which resemble the claws of a dragon! It emerges scarlet red in spring, changing to burgundy in summer. In autumn, this acer is a spectacular crimson-red.

 

 

Acer palmatum ‘Bloodgood‘ (AGM)

A large deciduous shrub with deeply cut, dark purple-red foliage which turns a rich red in autumn. It produces tiny purple-red flowers in spring.

Acer palmatum ‘Red Wine’

A semi-dwarf deciduous shrub to small tree. It bears lush green, red tipped leaves. In the autumn it turns vibrant shades of yellow, orange and red. Can be grown in a container to make a stunning patio addition.

Acer palmatum ‘Inaba-shidare’ (AGM)

A tree with small purple-red leaves which turn bright crimson in the autumn. ‘Inaba-shidare’ has a mound-like habit. Holder of an RHS Award of Garden Merit.

Acer palmatum ‘Metamorphosa’

A compact, deciduous shrub which starts as a pale yellowish-green, developing white leaf edges in late spring. In the summer the leaves can turn red with autumn colour being a stunning golden-yellow.

 

 

Acer palmatum ‘Trompenburg’

A spectacular variety with unusual glossy, rich purple-red leaves with rolled margins. In the autumn it turns a bright firey red.

Acer japonicum ‘Vitifolium‘ (AGM)

A vigorous, bushy tree or shrub with large, lobed mid-green leaves. In the autumn it gives a showstopping display, with leaves turning a vibrant red, orange and purple.

Acer palmatum ‘Skeeter’s Broom’

A deciduous small tree or shrub with an upright habit. Leaves are a lobed shape, bright red in spring and then purple-red in summer before turning a bright ruby-red in the autumn.

Acer palmatum ‘Katsura’

A small deciduous tree which bears striking orange young leaves, margined in red. In summer the leaves turn a bright green-yellow shade, with yellow-orange tones in autumn.
