Hanging Baskets – How to Take Care of them
Hanging baskets are a brilliant way to add colour and fragrance to any outdoor space. To keep your hanging basket plants beautiful and healthy all summer long, follow these quick and easy steps.
Deadhead
Remove faded flowers by pinching them off where they meet the stem, this enables the promotion of new life and blooms.
Fertilise
Frequently watering your hanging basket may mean that nutrients leak out at a faster pace from the potting mix. Therefore, feeding plants with a slow release fertiliser/ liquid fertiliser will ensure plants are healthy throughout summer and encouraging flowering.
Water regularly
Due to the fast growing nature of bedding plants in small spaces, they are prone to dry out at a faster rate. This means that a regular watering schedule is crucial to keep the plants thriving and healthy. Watering first thing in the morning and last thing at night is suggested as the water has more time to get to the roots before it evaporates in the heat. In the hotter summer months watering twice a day is required.
Cut back overgrown plants
If your hanging basket starts to look overgrown or ‘straggly’, cut them back to promote dense growth.
Replace tired plants
If you notice any plants in your hanging basket that are no longer thriving or have dried out, then don’t be afraid to replace with a new plant to fill the gap.
Going on holiday? Give your hanging basket a haircut
If you are going on holiday and want to return to a beautiful, healthy basket, trim back each plant so they are short and neat. Add a slow release feed and water thoroughly on departure, if possible give to a neighbour or friend to water whilst you’re away!
