Ensure a long season of colour in your garden with our choices of bulbs to plant in the autumn that flower in spring – with a little forward planning you can enjoy bursts of colour from bulbs almost all year round. Our ‘100 days of colour’ has varieties flowering one after another from March, right through to July.
Bulbs for a Burst of Spring Colour!
Popular spring bulbs include tulips, daffodils, crocuses, hyacinths, and snowdrops. Each species has its own distinct beauty, ranging from the bold, vibrant jewel-like colours of tulips to the delicate, ethereal bell-shaped snowdrops. Many varieties are also fragrant, making them perfect for filling the air with sweet scents during the spring season.
To enjoy these early spring blooms, bulbs need to be planted in autumn – from September through to November ideally, typically before the ground freezes. They require a period of cold dormancy in the soil to stimulate growth.
When planting, bulbs should be placed pointed end up and at a depth of about two to three times their height. Well-draining soil is essential to prevent rot, and choosing a sunny or partially shaded location ensures strong, healthy growth.
Once planted, spring bulbs require minimal maintenance. Most species are hardy and can tolerate varying conditions. After they bloom, it’s important to let the foliage die back naturally, as this allows the bulb to absorb nutrients for the next season’s growth.
Spring flowering bulbs offer a stunning, low-maintenance way to bring life to gardens after the dullness of winter. Their resilience and beauty make them a favourite for gardeners looking to create a vibrant landscape year after year. Whether used in flower beds, borders, or containers, these bulbs are a sure way to brighten any space in the springtime.
