Spring Flowering Bulbs: A Burst of Colour After Winter
Spring flowering bulbs are among the first plants to emerge after the winter, adding a vibrant burst of color to gardens when most other plants are still dormant. These bulbs are essentially underground storage units, packed with all the nutrients and energy needed to produce beautiful blooms once the weather warms up.
Popular spring bulbs include tulips, daffodils, crocuses, hyacinths, and snowdrops. Each species has its own distinct beauty, ranging from the bold, vibrant jewel-like colours of tulips to the delicate, ethereal bell-shaped snowdrops. Many varieties are also fragrant, making them perfect for filling the air with sweet scents during the spring season.
To enjoy these early spring blooms, bulbs need to be planted in autumn – from September through to November ideally, typically before the ground freezes. They require a period of cold dormancy in the soil to stimulate growth.
When planting, bulbs should be placed pointed end up and at a depth of about two to three times their height. Well-draining soil is essential to prevent rot, and choosing a sunny or partially shaded location ensures strong, healthy growth.
Once planted, spring bulbs require minimal maintenance. Most species are hardy and can tolerate varying conditions. After they bloom, it’s important to let the foliage die back naturally, as this allows the bulb to absorb nutrients for the next season’s growth.
