Bedding down for Autumn!

As the vibrant colours of summer fade, bedding plants offer an opportunity to refresh your planting and add bursts of vibrant colour, from rich reds, pops of pinks, to fiery oranges and golden yellows, to brighten garden displays as the days grow shorter.

Our cheery bedding and patio plants will pack your garden beds, borders, baskets and pots with vibrant blooms and provide continuous colour through winter into spring as many of these plants are winter-hardy bedding plants such as pansies, violas, primroses, and cyclamen, which are more resistant to cold weather and can survive light frosts.

Did you know…

We grow over 80% of our total bedding plants on our 4.5 acre production nursery at The Gardener’s Garden Centre, Knockholt. That’s home-grown quality you can trust.

Plant some of our top favourite bedding choices this autumn…

Autumn Flowering Chrysanthemums
For a late-season fireworks display, Chrysanthemums are hard to beat. Hardy garden Chrysanthemums give colour from September right through until the first real autumn frost. Excellent as cut flowers too!  Look out for our home-grown ‘Gigi’ Trio featuring stunning colour combinations all in one pot!

Wallflowers
The scents and colours of traditional Wallflowers are simply captivating, but the variety ‘Sugar Rush’ has three great qualities. Firstly, it’s dwarf – ideal for containers and less likely to be blown over in borders. Secondly, it branches strongly so develops into bushy plants, and the kicker is the third feature – it flowers in the autumn and then again in the spring. The first flowers open in autumn and may last into December. Snip them off as they fade and the plants will take a little break then come back into flower in spring.

Violas, Pansies and Cyclamen
You really can’t go wrong with any of these three when it comes to making your displays ‘pop’ with long-lasting colour. They can tolerate frost and often bloom throughout winter and into spring. Their colours go particularly well with plants such as Cineraria, Heathers, Skimmia and Heuchera. And for a stunning cascade of colour from your pots and baskets, why not plant trailing Pansy Cool Wave. There are over 30 colours and mixes to choose from in our Coolings Essentials Pack Bedding range with super prices held for nine years!

Sweet William Dianthus ‘Festival Mix’
Dianthus will brighten up any garden with their cheery colours and delicate scent in winter AND spring. The serrated edged petals are bi-coloured, in vivid shades of white, pink, purple, and red. Easy to care for and ideal for beds, baskets and containers, adding a cottage garden charm to flower beds and can continue to bloom into early winter. Compact and perfect for borders or containers.

Primroses / Primulas
Although often associated with spring, primroses and primulas can be planted in autumn for a burst of colour that lasts well into winter. These compact, cheery plants contrast beautifully against autumn foliage.

Cineraria ‘Silver Leaf’
A popular and attractive ornamental foliage plant that makes the perfect foil for flowers with strong or pastel colours. It’s great for adding interest to your bedding displays.

Ornamental Cabbage
These plants are known for their bold, colorful foliage that can add interest to autumn and winter gardens. Their leaves are ruffled and come in colors ranging from green to purple, pink, and white. They tolerate frost very well.

Heathers
Excellent for adding texture and colour to autumn gardens, with tiny, bell-shaped flowers and evergreen foliage. Their low maintenance makes them a favourite for ground cover in borders.

Heuchera
Heuchera are great for filling gaps in containers surrounded by seasonal bedding plants such as Cyclamen, Violas and Pansies. The perfect way to add cheerful autumnal colour to your doorstep, patio or balcony. They are the perfect all-season, fuss free plant that is happy in sun or shade and makes fantastic ground cover to keep weeds away and they look stunning in pots and planters. You can also add trailing plants like Ivy around the edges to make the container feel like it is overflowing. The foliage of Heuchera will really stand out on their own, making them a great addition to garden beds and borders, from deep reds to lime green the colour choice is surprising!

Sedums
Sedums can be used as bedding plants. They are drought-tolerant succulents with fleshy leaves and star-shaped flowers. In autumn, they produce vibrant clusters of flowers that attract pollinators like bees. A versatile plant, Sedum can be used as a ground cover plant in flower beds, rockeries, and dry stone walls and planted in pots and containers for textural interest. They are a perennial, so you can enjoy their blooms year after year.
