A Trip Down Rose Lane

A- | A+

For me, there are two things that accelerate my nostalgia meter. The first being a good old photograph that captures a treasured moment in time - the place, the feelings and the people in it, instantly rush back to me and I’m able to live that moment over and over again. The second, is Roses. The sight and smell of a Rose transports me back to happy childhood visits to my Nan’s house. There was every colour in her garden. After they bloomed, she would proudly prune to get “a second showing” as my brother and I attentively hovered by her collecting the cuttings that always found their way to various vases and bowls around her house.

The fragrance of a rose still sends me to a euphoric high. No one has to tell me to “take time to smell the roses”. Our cherished memories can be a great source of comfort to us and can be awoken by all kinds of sensory triggers, which results in a feeling of nostalgia.

Amongst our huge and varied range of Roses this autumn, you will find a beautiful range of Nostalgic and Celebration Roses – perfect for evoking sentimentality or to mark a special occasion or event. Our Nostalgic Roses have very full, fragrant blooms reminiscent of old fashioned Roses but with more compact growth than many Shrub Roses of this type – growing to about 90 – 120cm tall. Generally speaking, they boast good disease resistance, are ideal for Rose beds, planted in a mixed border, or even in a large container. They are also excellent for cut blooms.

Here are some of our favourite Nostalgia Roses from this year’s range:

Rosa ‘Enchantress’ - NEW to Coolings
A beautiful soft pink hybrid tea rose. Bears large, superbly scented flowers all summer and well into autumn. Its strong green foliage makes it an excellent cutting variety and the perfect addition to any bed or border. Grows to 120cm in height and similar spread.

Rosa ‘Perfect Harmony’ – NEW to Coolings
I love this Hybrid Tea for its unusual mix of colours. The outer petals of its creamy yellow flowers are edged with wide, pink margins. They brag a fantastic fragrance and will bloom from late spring into autumn. Grow to about 1m tall.

Rosa ‘Nostalgia’
This RHS Award of Garden Merit winning variety is truly eye-catching. Its unusual colour combination is simply stunning – creamy white fading to bright cherry-red at the tips. The strawberries and cream flowers are exceptionally fragrant and perfect for cutting – just as well as they will look beautiful in a vase. Forms a neat upright bush that would be ideal for growing in containers. A Hybrid Tea you really won’t forget.

Top pick Celebration Rose:

Rosa ‘My Girl’ – NEW to Coolings
A superb, repeat flowering bush Rose bearing beautiful, light yellow (darker towards the flower centre) blooms with a decent scent. Blooms appear individually or in small clusters on stout, strong stems from early summer, and will stand up to heavy showers. Two extra plusses are that the foliage is large, and that the flowers last well when cut. Mixes well with stronger reds and apricot-copper roses. Grows to around 90cm in height.

I would also like to draw your attention to two NEW Climbing/Patio roses this year:

Rosa ‘Little Rambler’ – NEW to Coolings
This miniature rambler might have small flowers but boy are they showstopping! Small, double, sweetly scented, light pink flowers from July to September that really stand out against its glossy, dark green leaves. Its colour will fade with age and as it will repeat flower, it’s ideal for covering a large, sunny wall in a fertile, moist, but well-drained site.

Rosa ‘Love Knot’ – NEW to Coolings
This RHS award-winning variety is like a classic climbing red rose in miniature form, covering itself throughout summer and autumn with small but beautifully formed, deep red blooms which are perfect for cut flowers. Its compact size, upright habit and abundance of blooms make it ideal for training on fences, trellis and arches, or even on an obelisk in the middle of a border.

With over 200 varieties of Rose to choose from here at Coolings, we’re confident we’ll have the perfect fit for you. Our staff are always on hand if you need help and advice in selecting the right choice for your garden – don’t be afraid to ask!
