As the New Year goes as swiftly as it came, we all find ourselves looking for something new and exciting, especially for the garden to brighten the approaching spring. Our large selection of camellias will do just that. These evergreen shrubs are the undiscovered colour of the winter and spring garden with waxy dark green foliage and a tremendous array of flowers of all sizes. Camellias are not that difficult to grow as long as they are planted in acidic soil. They will thrive in almost any tricky semi-shaded area, needing only minimal care once established. Most grow into large shrubs or small trees but are extremely versatile when it comes to growing them as hedges, wall shrubs or in large containers.
At Coolings we present some great varieties to get you started through the season;
Camellia x williamsii ‘Anticipation’ has a narrow upright shape bearing very large crimson pink peony flowers in late winter and early spring. They require an acid soil and full or partial shade as this is where they flower best. Developed in the 1930’s by JC Williams this camellia is very hardy and is reasonably fast growing plant.
Camellia Japonica ‘Lavinia Maggi’, is a vigorous spreading shrub, producing beautiful medium sized formal double white flowers with red and pink stripes in early to mid-spring. Again they require full or partial shade and an acidic soil.
Camellia x williamsii ‘Jurys Yellow’ is another narrow and erect variety but develops stunning anemone form creamy white flowers with centres of yellow petaloids in mid to late spring. Although flowers are produced throughout springtime they do require the right conditions. They benefit greatly form the protection of a wall and again require they require full or partial shade and an acidic soil.
To help your Camellias thrive we also sell a range of different feeds and composts. As mentioned Camellias require an acid soil, if your garden is not particularly acidic you would need to use ericaceous compost at the time of planting. This will have the correct pH level and all the feed the plant will require for its first year. After the first year we would recommend you use an additional feed. Azalea, Camellia and Rhododendron feed will help to promote the correct growing conditions for your Camilla by increasing the acidity of the soil and providing the correct nutrients to promote strong healthy growth and beautiful flowers.
