Very Impressive Potagers

Create a dazzling display with a mix of fruit, vegetables, edible flowers and seeds.  A potager (or essential kitchen garden as I know it) is a typically French concept and especially useful where space is limited by adding different dimensions to a border.  More importantly, a potager can be redesigned every year because most plants are annual giving the gardener the opportunity to trial different combinations in order to capture the decorative effect.  Potagers when combined with Buxus sempervirens (box) edging and a topiary sculpture carry the most impact, or even think about edging your border with Lavender, Rosemary, Chives or Strawberries!

And don’t forget… enrich your soil annually, water and feed your plants with a liquid fertilizer and protect from slugs and snails.

Planting Combinations:

For a cottage garden theme
Strawberries, Rainbow Chard, Red Sprouts, Decorative Climbing Beans; Lavender, Nasturtiums, Calendulas, Violas, Chives (edible flowers); Poppy (edible seeds).

For a Mediterranean theme
Rosemary, Thyme, Dill, Fennel, Garlic, African Basil (purple leaves); Decorative Tomatoes, Marjoram, Mixed Salad Leaves (Lollo Rosso/Bianco, Rocket); Dwarf Sunflowers (edible seeds).
