Short Pruning Fruit Tree Courses at East Malling Research Institute

There are some courses which Coolings are unable to deliver as we don’t have the facilities but to help you get the very best experience we’ve teamed up with East Malling research to deliver the following courses at their site in East Malling.

Summer Pruning of Fruit Trees

Cost: £50 (Includes 10% Coolings Family Discount)

Wednesday 20th June 2018 9.30am to 12.30pm OR Friday 22nd June 9.30am to 12.30pm

This largely practical workshop will cover the basic principles of summer pruning and enable you to commence pruning with confidence.

Some of these will take place partly in the Hatton Fruit Garden; formerly the kitchen garden of the Grade 1 listed Bradbourne House.


The three hour session will cover:

• Why Prune?
• Winter v Summer pruning
• What happens after pruning
• How to keep your tree under control
• How to produce the right size and shape to suit your garden
• Equipment.
• Essential tips and trade secrets.


Winter Pruning of Fruit Trees

Cost: £80 (Includes 10% Coolings Family Discount)

Thursday 15th November 2018 9.30am to 3.30pm

This largely practical workshop for winter pruning of fruit trees will concentrate mainly on top fruit varieties such as apples, pears, plums and cherries. You will find out how to make the most of your garden and how you can produce a good crop of juicy fruit in a small area. Great for those with some experience of winter pruning but wish to gain more information on pruning and tree forms, also useful for people who would like to plan a fruit garden.

What will I learn?
• Reasons for pruning
• Equipment choices
• Timing
• Recognising different tree forms and deciding on the best form for your needs
• Recognising ages of wood
• Choosing varieties
• Why there are rootstocks
• What space do I need
• Practical tree pruning on small trees of differing forms
• Identifying diseases
• Setting objectives and producing a pruning plan for your trees.
• What to look for in tree purchase including rootstock choices
• how to overcome problems in one’s own trees.

Plant and Establish your Fruit Tree

Cost: £45 (Includes 10% Coolings Family Discount)

Friday 7th December 2018 9.30am – 12.30pm

What will I learn?
Dealing with apples principally, looking at:
• Effective planting
• Spacing
• Staking
• Tree form and rootstocks
• Aftercare is also included



 


Framework Grafting

Cost: £120 (Includes 10% Coolings Family Discount)

Friday 4th May 2018 9.30am – 3.30pm

The course will be informal; numbers are deliberately limited so that those attending can receive the necessary individual attention. This is where the main branch framework of the tree is retained.


Bench grafting 

Cost: £120 (Includes 10% Coolings Family Discount)

Wednesday 6th February 2019 9.30am – 3.30pm

Lead by expert, John Easton, this course will teach you how to graft apple trees, focusing on whip and tongue grafting.

We will deal with:

• Knife handling
• Sharpening
• Tree production
• Pollinator branches
• Changing varieties
• Tree repair
